Tanegashima-shi - Tanegashima-ji

Japanese: 種子島氏 - たねがしまうじ

Kanmu Heishi. A clan that has ruled Osumi Tanegashima since the Kamakura period. According to popular belief, after the fall of the Heike clan, Nobumoto, the son of Kiyomori's grandson Yukimori, who was hiding out in Kamakura, was adopted by Hojo Tokimasa, who then granted him the fief of Tanegashima through Tokitaka's entreaty. Tokitaka, who lived towards the end of the Sengoku period, is famous for buying a gun from a Portuguese man who had been cast ashore and having his retainers study how to make it. During the Edo period, the clan was under the influence of the Shimazu clan, and in the Meiji period, he became a baron. (→ Tanegashima guns, Introduction of guns)
