A Russian (Soviet) bass singer. One of the greatest bass singers of the 20th century. Born into a poor family in Kazan, he changed jobs frequently from childhood and became friends with Gorky. He joined a touring opera company without receiving formal musical education. At the age of 19, he began formal vocal studies and appeared on the opera stage in St. Petersburg and Moscow. He appeared at La Scala in Milan in 1901 and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1907. In 1908, he sang the title role of Boris Godunov (Mussorgsky) at the Paris Opera produced by Diaghilev, and gained worldwide fame. In 1913, he appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and achieved phenomenal success. In addition to his extraordinary vocal volume and beautiful voice, he also excelled in acting, and left a legacy of singing in Russian operas, including Boris Godunov, which became his lifelong hit role, as well as Italian and French operas. He never returned to his homeland after 1922, and retired in 1935. He spent his later years in Paris. He came to Japan in 1936. → Carouso Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
