Onryōgoto - vengeful spirits

Japanese: 怨霊事 - おんりょうごと

Kabuki acting and direction. It was popular during the Genroku period (1688-1704). It is a performance by young female actors in which spirits of the dead and living express their grudges and torment their opponents. It is often turned into dance using kouta and joruri. It may also include acrobatics such as tightrope walking, folding screen walking, and somersaults, and there are also performances in which animals such as cats, snakes, and chickens possess the characters and drive them crazy. Stories such as "Asamamono" and "Dojojimono", as well as "Sagimusume" (Heron Girl), are all derived from this style. [Kondo Mizuo]

歌舞伎の演技･演出。元禄期(1688‐1704)にさかんに行われた。若女方の芸で，死霊や生霊が恨みをのべ相手を苦しめるもの。小唄や浄瑠璃を用い，舞踊化されることが多い。綱わたり，屛風わたり，宙返りなどの軽業を見せることもあり，猫や蛇，鶏などの動物がのりうつって狂う演出もある。〈浅間物〉や〈道成寺物〉をはじめ《鷺娘》などもこの系統から生まれたものである。【近藤瑞男】
