A modified structure found at the 5' end of mRNA in eukaryotic cells. After transcription, one phosphate (p) is removed from the 5'-terminal nucleotide (pppN...) of the mRNA (ppN...), which reacts with guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to form GpppN..., and then a methyl group is added to the 7th position of guanine (G) to form a cap structure (CH 3 -GpppN...).
