The name of a period of early Kabuki. Kabuki began as a form of dancing performed by women, represented by Okuni of Izumo, but in 1629 (Kan'ei 6), "Onna Kabuki" was banned, and instead, Wakashu Kabuki emerged to the forefront of society. It developed from the performing arts of young men that had been performed in parallel since the heyday of Onna Kabuki. However, this was also banned in 1652 (Shoo 1) on the grounds that it corrupted public morals. The Wakashu Kabuki era lasted for a short period of just over twenty years. The art was not much different from Onna Kabuki, but it is characterized by the development of the art of dancing by the young actors who played the leading roles, the growing influence of Noh and Mai-Kyogen, and the incorporation of acrobatic performances. Representative actors include Saruwaka Kanzaburo, Tamagawa Sennojo, and Ukon Genzaemon, and many of them continued to be active in the subsequent "yaro kabuki" period.
