Austropeplea ollula (English name)

A freshwater snail of the family Lymnaea. The shell is about 1 cm high and 0.7 cm wide. It is egg-shaped, thin and translucent. The shell surface is yellowish brown and shiny, but may be stained gray-brown. The body layer is large and rounded. The shell opening is egg-shaped, with a thin, rounded outer edge. The soft body is dark gray-black, with triangular antennae on the head, at the base of which are the eyes. It is found throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and is often found in rice fields, swamps, and ditches near human dwellings. It is also found in China and the Korean Peninsula. It is an intermediate host for the liver fluke, which parasitizes cattle and sheep.

淡水産のモノアラガイ科の巻貝。殻の高さおよそ1cm，幅0.7cm。卵形で薄質半透明。殻表は黄褐色で光沢があるが，灰褐色に汚れていることもある。体層は大きく円みがある。殻口は卵形で，外縁は薄くて円く湾曲する。軟体は暗灰黒色で頭には三角形状の触角があり，その基部に眼がある。北海道から沖縄まで全国に分布し，田や沼また人家近くの溝に多い。中国や朝鮮半島などにも分布する。ウシやヒツジなどに寄生するカンテツ(肝蛭)の中間宿主である。
