Along with the seaport cities of Mombasa and Kilwa in the central part of the Kenyan coast, it flourished as a center of trade in the Indian Ocean from the 13th century onwards. Zheng He's expedition to the South Seas arrived in 1414. In 1498, Vasco da Gama called at the port and, with the help of the skilled pilot Ibn Majid, developed a sea route to India. It became a trading post for Portugal, but after the base was moved to Mombasa, it went into decline from the end of the 16th century.

モンバサ，キルワなどと並んで13世紀以降インド洋交易の中心都市として繁栄。鄭和の南海遠征隊が1414年に来航。1498年にはヴァスコ＝ダ＝ガマが寄港して，有能な水先案内人イブン＝マージドを得て，インド航路を開拓した。ポルトガルの貿易拠点になったが，拠点がモンバサに移ると，16世紀末から衰退した。
