A full-length novel by Austrian author Stifter, published in 1857. Hebbel harshly criticized it, saying that anyone who finishes reading it will "be given the crown of Poland," and Nietzsche praised it as a "treasure of German prose" worthy of repeated reading. Drawing on the lineage of literary novels in a broad sense, this work depicts the development of the human soul. The process of the young Heinrich's awakening to learning, art, and love, and the story of his guide, Baron Liesach, and Mathilde's past love, are interwoven in the setting of a rose mansion, and are told in the "spiritual" climate of late summer, which is comparable to the summer days that come in late autumn, when winter and death are imminent. It is an elegy of old age lamenting the past of summer and youth, and a hymn to the youth nurtured by that elegy.
