The fundamental characteristic of mysticism is the experience of unity between the absolute and the self, which is technically called ``mystical union (unio mystica).'' Since this is a union with the absolute that transcends humans, a union with something absolutely other than the ordinary self, it can only be realized by breaking away from the self and breaking through the self-confined framework.
