Castor oil (himashuyu)

Japanese: ヒマシ油(蓖麻子油) - ひましゆ(英語表記)castor oil
Castor oil (himashuyu)
Castor oil extracted by pressing from seeds. Seeds contain 35-57% oil. The main component is ricinoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid with 18 carbon atoms and a hydroxyl group, accounting for 85-90%. Melting point (freezing point) -10 to -17°C, specific gravity 0.950 to 0.975, refractive index n D 30 = 1.477 to 1.479, saponification value 176 to 187, iodine value 81 to 91 (non-drying oil). It has a higher viscosity and specific gravity than ordinary fats and oils, and mixes well with alcohol and glacial acetic acid, but is difficult to dissolve in petroleum ether.
