Light absorption

Light absorption is the phenomenon in which the energy of a monochromatic light component is taken in by a medium when it passes through it. Light absorption also includes cases in which the direction of light changes due to interaction with the medium, without giving energy to the medium as in scattering, resulting in a net loss of energy. When light enters a transparent medium, some of it is absorbed and the rest is transmitted. The light energy dE absorbed by an infinitesimal portion dx of the medium (where dx is the distance in the direction of light propagation) is proportional to dx and to the energy E of the incident light, so it can be expressed as dE = - kEdx .

光が媒質を通過する際に，その単色光成分のエネルギーが媒質に取り込まれる現象が光の吸収である。散乱のように媒質にエネルギーを与えないで，光の進行方向が媒質との相互作用で変わり，実質的にエネルギーが損失することも光吸収に含めて考える。透明な媒質に光が入ると，その一部が吸収され，他は透過する。媒質の微小部分dx(ただしdxは光の進行方向の距離とする)で吸収される光のエネルギーdEは，dxに比例し，かつ入射光のエネルギーEに比例するから，　dE＝－kEdxと表せる。
