A general term for flatworms belonging to the order Polycladida of the class Turbellaria. This name comes from their flat bodies. All are marine and many live on the undersides of stones in the intertidal zone, but some are internally or externally parasitic on other animals or have a planktonic lifestyle. Their bodies are broad, leaf-like or band-like. They are 0.7 to 50 mm long, and the cell layer covering their surface contains ciliated cells, glandular cells, and sensory cells, which secrete fluid from the glandular cells and move by gliding over rocks using the cilia.
