A formal jacket worn by men in the Philippines. It is also called Barong Pilipino or simply Barong. It is a long-sleeved shirt made from pineapple fibers, with slits on both sides and embroidery on the front. It is said to have been imported from Mexico during the Spanish colonial period. Before the 1960s, pull-over, loose-fitting shirts were common, but in the 1970s, open-front, slim-fitting shirts became popular. The latter was favored by President Marcos, so it is also called the Marcos type. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
