Warm water mass

A warm water eddy is a mass of warmer seawater scattered throughout the ocean. It is usually circular, with a diameter of 100 to 200 km, and has a rotating motion. It is also called a warm water eddy. The ocean was once thought to have homogeneous properties over a fairly large area, but with the progress of ocean observation methods over the last 20 years or so, it has become known that the ocean has variations on various spatial and temporal scales. The most notable of these are the warm water masses and cold water masses that are generated by variations in ocean currents such as the Kuroshio Current and the Gulf Stream.

海洋中に散在する周囲より高温の海水の塊。ふつう，直径100kmから200km程度の円形状をなし回転運動を伴っており，暖水渦ともいう。かつては海洋はかなり大規模な範囲にわたって均質な性質をもつと考えられていたが，最近20年ほどの海洋観測法の進歩とともに，海洋にはさまざまな空間スケールと時間スケールの変動が存在することが知られるようになった。そのなかで最も顕著なのが黒潮や湾流のような海流の変動によって生じる暖水塊と冷水塊である。
