Eulji Mundeok - Itsushi Bundok

Japanese: 乙支文徳 - いつしぶんとく

A military commander in the late 6th century in Goguryeo, Korea. His birth and death years are unknown. He excelled not only in tactics but also in poetry and prose. According to the Book of Sui, when Emperor Yang sent an expeditionary force to Goguryeo, Wende lied and joined the Sui army to gauge their strength. In actual battle, he also deceived the Sui army, causing them to retreat, and of the original 305,000 Sui troops, only 2,700 returned to Liaodong. Even today, he is celebrated in Korea as a hero who saved the country. [Hamada Kosaku]

朝鮮，高句麗の6世紀末の武将。生没年不詳。戦術はもとより詩文にも優れた。《隋書》によれば，煬帝（ようだい）が遠征軍を高句麗に派遣するや，文徳は偽って身を隋軍に投じて軍勢をさぐった。実戦においても，隋軍をあざむき大いにこれを敗走せしめ，初め30万5000の隋軍は，遼東に帰還した者わずかに2700であったという。朝鮮では救国の英雄として今もたたえられている。【浜田耕策】
