It is an evergreen tall tree of the Lauraceae family, found in warm regions of Japan, Taiwan, China, etc. Many large trees with diameters of over 2m are known, and the bark has fine cracks. The leaves are alternate, egg-shaped, elliptical, and have three prominent veins. It has a fragrant fragrance when crushed. Many small yellowish-white, six-petaled flowers bloom in panicles from May to June. The wood is steam distilled to extract camphor and camphor oil. Camphor is used as an insect repellent and fragrance, as well as a raw material for celluloid, and as a cardiac stimulant known as vitamin camphor. The wood is hard and shiny, and is used for high-quality building materials, furniture, ships, etc.

クスノキ科の常緑高木で，日本の暖地，台湾，中国などに分布する。直径 2m以上の大木も多く知られ，樹皮には細かい割れ目がある。葉は互生し卵状楕円形で3本の脈が目立つ。もむと芳香がある。5～6月頃，黄白色で6弁の小花が多数円錐花序をつくって咲く。材を水蒸気蒸留して樟脳と樟脳油 (片脳油) をとる。樟脳は防虫剤や香料とするほかセルロイドの原料になり，またビタカンファーとして強心剤にも用いられる。材は堅く光沢があり，高級建築材，家具材，船舶材などに用いられる。
