Process engineering

Also known as process systems engineering, it is a new field within recent chemical engineering, and is a study of methodologies for planning, designing, and operating chemical processes. Chemical engineering thermodynamics, transport phenomena theory, reaction kinetics, fluid mechanics, and other important fields that serve as the foundations of chemical engineering, tend to focus on the analysis of phenomena. However, simply collecting this analytical information is not necessarily effective for planning, designing, and operating chemical processes and equipment, and new engineering methodologies for rational planning and control are essential. Therefore, the main content of process engineering is process modeling, optimal decision-making, and evaluation, and it is premised on the use of computers.

プロセスシステム工学ともいう。最近の化学工学のなかの一つの新しい分野で，化学プロセスの計画，設計，操作の方法論に関する学問である。化学工学の基礎として重要な化学工学熱力学，輸送現象論，反応速度論，流体力学などの学問はどちらかといえば現象の解析を中心とするものである。ところがこれらの解析的情報を集めるのみでは化学プロセスや装置の計画，設計，操作の方法にとって必ずしも有効ではなく，合理的な計画や制御のための新たな工学的方法論が不可欠となってくる。したがって，プロセス工学では，プロセスのモデリング，最適決定，評価などがその主たる内容となり，コンピュータの活用を前提としている。
