Ikebana

Japanese: いけばな

It is written as Ikebana or Katsuhana. It is a technique of sashibana (flower arrangement). It is an art of expressing natural beauty by placing flowers and plants in a vase. It developed in the early Muromachi period as a way to decorate alcoves, and gave rise to various schools. At the time, Tatebana, or standing flowers, was the norm, and in the Edo period the name Ikebana or the general term Hanado emerged. The major schools are Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu, Mise, Koryu, and Adachishiki (Tokyo), and those run by various Buddhist sects include Saga-ryu (Daikaku-ji), Omuro-ryu (Ninna-ji), and Koyashin-ryu (Mount Koya). 生花，活花の字を当てる。挿花(さしばな)の一技法。花卉(かき)，草木を花器にさし，自然美を表す芸術。室町初期，床の間の飾り花として発達し諸流を生む。当時はたて花，すなわち立花(りっか)が主で，江戸期に生花，総称としての花（華）道の名が起こる。大流に池坊，小原流，草月流，未生流，古流，安達式（東京）があり，仏教諸宗派の経営するものに，嵯峨流（大覚寺），御室流（仁和寺），高野真流（高野山）などがある。第２次大戦後，旧習を破る前衛いけ花も発展。→花器
