A performer of Tsuguyama-ryu koto music and jiuta. His real name was Yoshikura Sukejiro. He was born in Osaka as the eldest son of Bunraku puppeteer Yoshida Tamasuke. He became blind at the age of five, and became a disciple of Tomizaki Sojun at the age of eight. He was initiated into Tsuguyama-ryu koto kumika at the age of 17, and Nogawa-ryu shamisen honte at the age of 19, and was given the stage name Tomiyoshi Harukoto. After his teacher's death in 1904 (Meiji 37), he took over the artist's name, and in 1908 he took the name Tomizaki Harunobu. In 1913 (Taisho 7), he gave a solo performance of jiuta masterpieces at the Yurakucho Theater in Tokyo, and moved to Tokyo the following year. In 1947 (Showa 22), he became president of the Japan Sankyoku Association and a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1980, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property and selected as a Person of Cultural Merit. He made a great contribution by bringing Osaka-style jiuta to Tokyo. He has a very large repertoire, and is especially known as a performer of Shigedayūmono (plays about Shigedayū), Eikanmono (plays about eternal leisure), and Sakumono (plays about harvest). His compositions include "Spring Enoshima," "Remaining Snow," "Saga no Yuki," and "Hana no To."
