A monk who lives a solitary life and seeks union with God and perfection. Also called anachoreta. In Christianity, the origins of monasticism can be found in the wilderness and deserts of Egypt, Palestine, and Syria in the early 3rd century, with examples such as Anthony. Christian monastic life developed from a hermitage style to a family style, and hermit orders such as those of Valombrosa, Camaldoli, and Carthusia were established in the 11th century, and those of Augustine and Celestine in the 13th century, and played a role in the renewal of the church. A famous modern hermit is the Saharan hermit Charles Eugène de Foucauld (1858-1916). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
