This is a legend that explains the origin of a stone with a footprint-like depression. It is also called the Footprint Stone, and is said to be the site of a divine spirit's descent or a memorial to a historical fact, but it is thought that it was originally a place of festivals and memorial services. The stone that is the subject of the rituals at Yamoto Shrine in Sozan, Togakushi, Nagano City, is where Shogun Taira no Koremochi was trying to slay a demon woman, but was unable to find her whereabouts. He sat on a large rock, prayed to the Kannon Bodhisattva, and then shot an arrow. There is a legend that he went in the direction of the arrow and defeated the demon woman, and it is said that the footprints were left on the stone where he stepped on, and it is still the center of festivals today. So Yamoto Shrine was enshrined here, and Yasaki Hachiman is enshrined at the spot where the arrow fell. Another example of a place that conveys the presence of gods and Buddhas is the "Kōbō Daishi Footprint Stone" in the grounds of Muryō-ji Temple in Nishiura, Gamagōri City, Aichi Prefecture. On his way from this temple to Okishima Benten in Hazu County, Daishi (Kūkai) stood on a rock on the coast and said, "I will leave my footprints as a memento of my journey," leaving behind the footprints of his straw sandals. At Joraku-ji Temple in Matsukawa, Nakano City, Nagano Prefecture, there is a Benkei Footprint Stone. When Benkei came to this area, suffering from thirst, he stepped on a nearby stone and water gushed out from the depression. Even now, water slowly bubbles up from beside the stone, keeping it moist. Another theory is that it is also said to be Yoshitsune's footprint or Yoshitsune's horseshoe mark. There are many legends about horse hoof prints, which are the footprints of a horse ridden by a god, hero, or noble person.
