Kasumi-tei (English) open levee

Japanese: 霞堤 - かすみてい（英語表記）open levee

River levees are usually constructed continuously to protect the inside of the levee from floods (in river engineering, the area through which the river flows from the levee is called the outside levee, and the area protected by the levee, which contains residential areas and farmland, is called the inside levee). Sometimes, however, the downstream end of a levee is opened and the upstream end of the next levee is extended inside the levee, overlapping with the levee on the upstream side. This is called a levee. It is mainly used on rapid rivers, and can be used for flood control by temporarily storing floodwaters.

河川堤防は，洪水から堤内 (河川工学では，堤防からみて河川の流れている地域を堤外，堤防で保護される居住地や田畑などのある地域を堤内という) を守るために，連続的に築造されるのが普通であるが，堤防の下流端を解放し，次の堤防の上流端を堤内に延ばして上流側の堤防と重複して築造することがあり，これを霞堤と呼ぶ。おもに急流河川で用いられ，洪水を一時的にためて，洪水調節に使うことができる。
