A medieval collection of prints based on the Bible. The name means "Poor Man's Bible." Made for the illiterate, the oldest is said to have belonged to Edmond de Rothschild in the mid-13th century, but the name was given later. Around 1460, probably in France, the illustrations were printed by woodblock along with the text and became widespread, and became a major source of inspiration for artists throughout the 15th and 16th centuries (such as tapestry sketches). The images in each scene are allegorical, relating to historical events in the Old Testament, from the Nativity through the Childhood of Christ to the Second Coming of Christ, or the Last Judgment.
