A city in the eastern part of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1939. It faces Toyama Bay to the east and includes Notojima in Nanao Bay to the north. The central city is a port city overlooking Nanao Bay, and has long been the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Noto Peninsula. Nanao Port was designated an open port in 1899, and has since developed as a key port on the Japan Sea route. In addition to industries such as electrical equipment, food, lumber and wood products, the fishing industry is also thriving, with fixed net fishing and aquaculture. It is a junction of the Nanao Line and the Noto Railway, and is home to Wakura Onsen and the ruins of Nanao Castle (historic site). In October 2004, it merged with Tatsuruhama Town, Nakajima Town, and Notojima Town in Kashima County. It has an area of 318.32 km2 . Population: 57,900 (2010).
