A village in Saiki County, on the western edge of Hiroshima Prefecture. Population 915 (1995). Bordering Shimane and Yamaguchi Prefectures to the west, it is located in the Chugoku Mountains with Mt. Jippo (1,319m) to the north and Mt. Kanmuriyama (1,339m) to the west, making it a cold, snowy region. It is the source of the Ota River, and a small amount of alluvial lowland forms along the river. At the end of the Sengoku period, the mountainous areas of Saiki County were called Yamazato, and Yoshiwa-go was included in this category. In 1554 (Tenbun 23), the Yoshiwa Yamazato Ikki rebelled against the rule of the Mori clan and fought on the side of Sue Harukata. During the Edo period, it was the fief of the Ueda clan, chief retainer of the Hiroshima domain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
