Psychiatry for children and school-age children. Children are in the process of development, so their symptoms cannot be understood without looking at them in the context of that process. In addition, because they are not socially and psychologically independent, they are strongly influenced by the circumstances of their lives, such as their relationships with their families, especially their parents. For this reason, the field of child psychiatry was born, but it has a shorter history than adult psychiatry, and progressed rapidly with the development of developmental psychology in the 20th century. The International Society of Child Psychiatry was founded in 1937.

小児ないし学童を対象とする精神医学。児童は発達の過程にあるので，その過程に即してみないと症状が理解できない。また，社会的，心理的にも独立した状態でないので，両親を中心とした家族との関係など，生活する場の状況の影響を強く受ける。そのために児童精神医学という領域が生れたが，成人の精神医学より歴史が浅く，20世紀に入って発達心理学の発展に伴い，急速に進歩した。国際児童精神医学会は 1937年に発足した。
