District Prosecutor's Office

A prosecutor's office is established corresponding to each summary court (Prosecutor's Office Act, Articles 1 and 2). For example, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors' Office corresponds to the Tokyo Summary Court, and the Tachikawa District Public Prosecutors' Office corresponds to the Tachikawa Summary Court. As of 2010, there are 438 district public prosecutors' offices nationwide. Deputy public prosecutors are only appointed to the position of public prosecutor at a district public prosecutor's office (Article 16, paragraph 2 of the same act. However, under Article 12 of the same act, as an exception, deputy public prosecutors may handle the duties of a public prosecutor at a district court). When the Minister of Justice deems it necessary for the time being due to a shortage of public prosecutors, he may have a public prosecutor's assistant officer at a district public prosecutor's office handle the duties of a public prosecutor at that office.

各簡易裁判所に対応して置かれる検察庁（検察庁法1条、2条）。たとえば東京簡易裁判所に対応して東京区検察庁が、立川簡易裁判所に対応して立川区検察庁が置かれている。区検察庁は、2010年（平成22）時点で全国に438庁ある。副検事が任命されるのは、区検察庁の検察官の職についてのみである（同法16条2項。ただし、同法12条により、例外として副検事が地方裁判所の検察官の事務を取り扱うこともある）。法務大臣は、当分の間、検察官が足りないため必要と認めるときは、区検察庁の検察事務官にその庁の検察官の事務を取り扱わせることができる。
