A type of idiophone, played with two sticks held in each hand. It is also called a vibraphone or vibe for short. A rich, vibrato-infused reverberation is produced by rotating an electric fan under each sound plate and attaching a resonator underneath it, which gives it its name. It can sustain a sound longer than a normal glockenspiel or marimba, and the pitch and quality can be subtly changed, creating a unique expression not found in conventional melodic percussion instruments. Since its invention in the United States in 1916, it has been widely used in dance music and jazz, with masters such as L. Hampton appearing. In the classical genre, it was pioneered in Berg's opera Lulu (1935), and there are also magnificent examples of its use in Boulez's Le Marteau sans maître.
