...They are called giant tortoises because the shape of their limbs and the skin on their necks resemble those of elephants. There are two extant species: the Aldabra giant tortoise, Geochelone gigantea (Aldabra giant tortoise) (illustration), found in the Seychelles and Aldabra Islands in the Indian Ocean, and the Galapagos giant tortoise, G. elephantopus (Galapagos giant tortoise) (illustration), found in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Most of the giant tortoises seen in Japanese zoos are Aldabra giant tortoises, and their carapace length can reach up to 1.2 meters.
