Born: February 23, 1633, London [Died] May 26, 1703. London. British civil servant. Author of the famous "Diary." He started out as a tailor's son, studied at Cambridge University, and became a civil servant under the patronage of Admiral E. Montagu, working in the Admiralty. He played an active role in politics after the Restoration, becoming First Lord of the Admiralty in 1673, losing his position in 1678 and being imprisoned in the Tower of London, but was reappointed in 1684. He was also elected President of the Royal Society. He retired from politics when William III became king after the Glorious Revolution in 1689. Today, he is remembered as the author of the "Diary," which covers the period from January 1, 1660 to May 31, 1669. His writings convey the inner workings of politics and the atmosphere of the court, but also frankly describe his theater, social interactions, and relationships with women, making him a highly regarded source of information on the customs of the Restoration period, as well as a literary work. Originally written in code, it was deciphered and published in 1825. Other works include Memoirs Relating to the State of the Royal Navy (1690).
