A three-volume Japanese language textbook written by Rodrigues. It was published between 1604 (Keicho 9) and 1608 for the purpose of helping Christian missionaries learn Japanese. It provides a detailed discussion of the general phenomenon of the national language at the time, with many concrete examples, centering on grammar, but also covering phonology, characters, spelling, vocabulary, style, and dialect. While it is based on the construction of the Latin grammar at the time, it also refers to the Japanese side and contains the author's own ideas. Along with the Nippon-Portuguese Dictionary, it is an essential resource for contemporary Japanese language research. This work was developed and expanded by the Arte breue da Lingoa Iapoa (published in Macau in 1620), which must be referred to when using the Dai Nippon Grammar. Copies of each are currently in existence at the Crawford House in England and at the Bowery Library of Oxford University.
