Jabalpur (English spelling)
A city in central Madhya Pradesh, central India. Located at an altitude of 402m in the southern basin of the Vindhya Mountains, surrounded by hills. The Gara district flourished as the main city of the Gond Kingdom in the 14th century. During the British colonial period, it developed into an industrial city after becoming the administrative center of the Narmada district. Iron ore, manganese, copper, lead, etc. were developed in the mountainous area, and the military machinery industry was particularly thriving, with general machinery and glass manufacturing also taking place. There are also many factories for oil extraction, flour milling, lumbering, tobacco, and textiles. The state high court and Jabalpur University, which has many colleges, are located in the city. There are many Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain ruins in the surrounding area. Population: 739,961 (1991).
