Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov

Japanese: ビノグラードフ(英語表記)Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov
Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov
1891‐1983
Soviet mathematician. He became director of the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow in 1934, a position he held for the rest of his life. His research work was mainly in analytical number theory, and he provided solutions or partial solutions to many problems, but he is particularly known for introducing a new method of considering a special type of series called a trigonometric sum and using its evaluation effectively. For example, he used this method to prove Goldbach's conjecture that "any sufficiently large odd number can be expressed as the sum of three prime numbers."

Vinogradov [Viktor Vladimilovich Vinogradov]

1895‐1969
A Soviet linguist, Russian linguist, and literary scholar. Like many linguists involved in Russian Formalism, he was also involved in literary research from the beginning. He is known for his analysis of the language and style of individual writers such as Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Lermontov, and Tolstoy, as well as his research into the language and style of literature in general, including the issue of "narration." In the field of linguistics and language studies, he has written a great deal on a wide range of subjects, mainly Russian, including grammar, word formation, lexicology, and word history.

ソ連邦の数学者。モスクワにあるステクロフ数学研究所の所長に1934年に就任し,以後終生その地位にあった。研究業績は主として解析的整数論に関するものであり,多くの問題に解,または部分的解答を与えたが,なかでも,三角和と呼ばれる特別な型の級数を考え,その評価をうまく行って利用するという新しい手法を導入したことは有名である。例えばこの手法によって,ゴルドバッハの予想に関して〈十分大きい奇数は3個の素数の和で表せる〉ことを示した。
