福井県西部を流れる川。九頭竜くずりゅう川第一の支流。福井・岐阜・滋賀3県の県境にある三国みくに岳（標高1209メートル）に源を発して北流し、越前市・鯖江さばえ市を流れて福井市高屋たかや町付近で九頭竜川に合流する。長さ71キロ。中流域に武生たけふ盆地がある。
鳥取県西部を流れる県内最大の川。広島県境の中国山地三国みくに山（標高1004メートル）や道後山に源を発して北東流し、途中北西に転じて米子よなご市皆生かいけ東方で美保湾に注ぐ。長さ77キロ。浸食の進んだ上流に石霞せっか渓などの峡谷、下流に米子平野がある。
