This ancient stone structure is located in Amida-cho, Takasago City, Hyogo Prefecture. It was carved into bedrock on the side of a hill called Tatsuyama, and is the object of worship at Oishi Shrine. It is a rectangular parallelepiped, 6.45m wide, 5.7m high, and 5.45m deep. A shallow groove 1.6m wide runs vertically on both sides, and a 1.75m protrusion is attached to the back. During the Edo period, it was called one of the three wonders of Japan. The Harima no Kuni Fudoki records the shape and size of the stone, and states that it was made by Mononobe no Moriya. However, judging from the manufacturing technique, it probably dates to the 7th century. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
