A prince of Emperor Jomei. His mother was Soga no Umako's daughter Hotei no Iratsume. He was the half-brother of Prince Nakano Oe (Emperor Tenchi) and Prince Oama (Emperor Tenmu). He was a cousin of Soga no Iruka and was in opposition to Prince Nakano Oe's faction. In 643, the second year of the reign of Emperor Kōgyoku, the Soga clan opposed Prince Yamashiro no Oe and forced him to commit suicide in order to make Prince Furuhito the heir to the throne. This arbitrary rule of the Soga clan came to an end with the extermination of Emishi (Emishi) and Iruka (the Taika Reforms) in 645. When Empress Kogyoku abdicated, she recommended Prince Nakano Oe, who in turn recommended Prince Karu (Emperor Kokutoku), and Prince Karu recommended Prince Furuhito. However, after the death of the Soga clan, Prince Furuhito refused, became a monk, and moved to Yoshino, and Prince Karu was designated as the heir to the throne. Later, Prince Furuhito was killed for plotting treason with those who were against the Taika Reforms. He was the first member of the imperial family to fall victim to the reforms.

舒明天皇の皇子。略して古人皇子。母は蘇我馬子の娘法提郎媛 (ほていのいらつめ) 。中大兄皇子 (天智天皇) ，大海人皇子 (天武天皇) の異母兄弟。蘇我入鹿の従兄弟で，中大兄皇子一派と対立する立場にあった。皇極2 (643) 年蘇我氏は古人皇子を皇位継承者とするため，山背大兄王と対抗し，自害させた。この蘇我氏の専断も，大化1 (645) 年の蝦夷 (えみし) ，入鹿誅滅で終り (→大化改新 ) ，皇極天皇は譲位の際中大兄皇子を，中大兄皇子は軽皇子 (孝徳天皇) を，軽皇子は古人皇子を推したが，蘇我氏なきあとの古人皇子は，これを固辞して出家し吉野に入り，皇嗣は軽皇子に定まった。のち古人皇子は反大化改新派の人々と謀反をはかったかどで殺された。改新の犠牲となった最初の皇族。
