Taishan Fukun Festival

Japanese: 泰山府君祭 - たいざんふくんさい

This is one of the festivals held by onmyoji (exorcists). Taishan Fukun is a deity from ancient China, but was syncretized with the Buddhist King Enma, who was believed to control human lifespan and fortune, and whose attendant, Tsukasa Myojin, managed the family registers of the underworld. Akayama Myojin, who was enshrined at the foot of Mount Hiei by Ennin of the Tendai sect, is said to be this deity. He is also linked to other Japanese deities such as Susanoo and Okuninushi, and was considered to be the original Jizo Bodhisattva according to the honji suijaku theory. Not only was he worshipped enthusiastically among the court nobles during the Heian period, but the samurai of the Kamakura shogunate also held festivals frequently, and the Abe clan, who were experts in onmyoji, were the ones who were most adept at this festival.

陰陽師が行う祭りの一つ。泰山府君は中国古代からの神であるが，仏教の閻魔大王と習合し，人間の寿命と福禄を支配し，その侍者司命神が冥府の戸籍を管理すると信ぜられた。天台宗の円仁が中国から勧請して比叡山麓にまつった赤山明神はこの神といわれ，また素戔嗚（すさのお）尊や大国主神など日本の神祇とも結びつけられ，本地垂迹説によって本地地蔵菩薩とされた。平安時代に宮廷公家の間で盛んにまつられたのみならず，鎌倉幕府でも武家がとくに頻繁に祭りを行い，陰陽家安倍氏が最も得意とした祭りであった。
