A city in the province of Limburg in the southern part of the Netherlands. It is located on the right bank of the Maas River, at the confluence with the Ruhr River. It obtained city rights in 1232. In the 14th and 15th centuries it prospered as a centre for the wool trade, and was the capital of the Duchy of Helder until 1543. It has been the seat of a bishopric since 1559, and the majority of its inhabitants are Catholic. Although it suffered heavy damage in World War II, the city boasts a late Romanesque cathedral (founded in 1224, later rebuilt) and St. Christoffel's Cathedral (1410). There is an agricultural produce market with a large-scale egg sorting and packaging facility, and the city is home to industries such as chemicals, electrical equipment, textiles, wood products, and cigars.
