Nanbanji Temple Rise and Fall Chronicle

Japanese:
Nanbanji Temple Rise and Fall Chronicle

A popular anti-Christian book compiled in the mid-Edo period. One volume. The editor is unknown. It is thought to have been compiled by a scholar who served the shogunate and feudal domain system, using anti-Christian books and traditions that appeared in the 1660s when the shogunate strengthened its ban on Christianity as material. The source material was the "Kirishitan Kongenki," also by an unknown author, which includes world geography information by Nishikawa Joken (1648-1724), so it is estimated to have been compiled in the late 18th century. Other works in the same genre include "Nanbanji Monogatari" and "Kirishitan Shumon Raichou Jikki," which reflect some historical facts, but are insignificant as historical documents. However, it became widely known through a woodblock print edition (1868) by the evil-busting monk Ugai Tetsujo (also known as Kiyu Dojin) of the late Edo period, and is also included in series such as the Shiseki Shuran.
