Moraea (English spelling)

Japanese: モレア（英語表記）Moraea

A perennial plant of the Iridaceae family cultivated for ornamental purposes. It is not widely used in Japan, but has been cultivated in Europe for a long time. The shape of the flowers and vegetative organs is very similar to that of the Iris genus, and they are closely related. It is distinguished from the Iris genus by the fact that the bases of the tepals are not fused and that they have corms underground. There are about 100 species in the Moraea genus, distributed in central and southern Africa. Of these, about 25 species are cultivated. M. iridioides L. (English name African iris) has a white outer perianth that is about 3 cm long.

観賞用に栽培されるアヤメ科の多年草。日本ではほとんど普及していないが，ヨーロッパでは古くから栽培される。花や栄養器官の形態はアヤメ属にひじょうによく似ており，互いに近縁である。アヤメ属とは花被片の基部が合着しないこと，地下に球茎を持つことで区別される。モレア属Moraeaには約100種があり，アフリカ中･南部に分布する。そのうち約25種が栽培化されている。M.iridioides L.(英名African iris)は，外花被は白色で長さ約3cm。
