The conditions for starting laser oscillation depend strongly on the performance of the optical resonator, i.e., the Q value, which indicates the sharpness of the resonance. If the Q value is kept small while the laser medium is excited, and the Q value is raised in a short time once the population inversion becomes large enough, the energy stored in the medium is released all at once. This method of producing high-output pulsed laser light is called Q switching, and in this case, it is necessary that the energy level that causes laser oscillation has a long lifetime.
