Agades (English spelling)

Japanese: アガデス(英語表記)Agadez; Agades
Agades (English spelling)
A city in central Niger. The capital of Agadez prefecture. It is located about 740 km northeast of Niamey, at the southern end of the Aïr Mountains. It was a key location on the ancient trade route across the Sahara Desert, and flourished as the capital of the Tuareg kingdom in the 15th century. It was occupied by France in 1904. Even today, it is a center for nomadic Tuareg people, and a distribution center for livestock products such as leather, grains, and vegetables. In addition to the tin and rock salt produced in the surrounding area, uranium ore has been developed in Arlit in the north, and its importance as a prefecture capital has increased. It is the intersection of the north-south road from Algiers in Algeria to the Gulf of Guinea and the east-west road (Uranium Road) to Niamey, and has a domestic airport. The historic district, including a 27-meter-high mosque made of mud and sun-dried bricks, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2013. Population: 78,289 (2001).
