Peach sparrow (Marumba gaschkewitschii)

Japanese: モモスズメ(桃雀) - モモスズメ（英語表記）Marumba gaschkewitschii

An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Sphingidae. Wingspan is 6-8cm. The top of the forewings is pointed, and the outer edge is serrated. The color is reddish brown with many black-brown lines, the outer edge and bottom of the wings are black, and there is a round pattern on the rear edge near the outer edge. The hind wings are crimson or red with a black pattern near the rear corner. It is distributed in various places from Hokkaido to Yakushima, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, China to India. It is the most common hawk moth in Japan, appearing twice a year from spring to summer. It is nocturnal and often flies to lights. The larvae are polyphagous, feeding on the leaves of many plants, including peach, plum, cherry, plum, apricot, pear, apple, and loquat, as well as euonymus and boxwood.
