In ancient China, the deeds of one emperor's generation were recorded in a chronological format. When several generations of these were accumulated, national histories in the form of annals were compiled, and when the dynasty changed, official histories such as the "Han Shu," "Jin Shu," and "Tang Shu" were compiled.
