Kolettis, Ioannis

Kolettis, Ioannis
Born: 1774. Syracuse
[Died] 1847
Greek politician. He studied medicine in Italy and became the personal physician to Ali Pasha's son. In 1819, he joined the Filiki Etheria. He served as a plenipotentiary at the first National Assembly in 1822, and played a leading role in politics and the military during the War of Independence. During Oson's regency, he was Minister of War and Navy and Ambassador to France (1840-43). After the September 1843 coup, he returned to Greece and worked hard to establish a constitution. However, when he became Prime Minister (1844-47), he essentially abolished the constitution and seized power. In foreign affairs, he implemented policies based on the "Megari Idea" (an ideology that sought to restore the ancestral territories centered on Constantinople). His anti-Ottoman stance won him popularity among the people, but his dictatorial attitude at home led to widespread election manipulation, favoritism, and bribery, which contributed to political corruption.
