...Population: 57,082 (1995). In the Middle Ages, it was called Yawatasho Imahama, and was the residence of the Imahama clan, a subordinate of the Sasaki Kyogoku clan. After the downfall of the Sengoku daimyo Azai clan in 1573 (Tensho 1), Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi, who came to rule over most of the three former territories of Sakata, Azai, and Ika counties, built a castle in Imahama in Sakata county, renamed it Nagahama, and moved some of the temples, shrines, and towns from the former Odani castle area, forming a castle town laid out in a grid pattern from north to south. ...
