A plucked string instrument of the Iranian lute family. "Se" means the number "three" and "tar" means "string". It has a small, bowl-shaped resonating body with a soundboard and a long, slender neck with 25 to 27 movable frets wound with gut strings. Since the mid-19th century, four metal strings have been added, but one is a drone string, and the original three-stringed character is maintained. The basic tuning is C 3 -C 4 -G 3 -C 4. It is used for classical music solos and song accompaniment, and is characterized by a technique of plucking the strings directly with the fingernails by finely vibrating the index finger of the right hand, or by striking or plucking the strings on the neck with the fingers of the left hand, which produces extremely subtle and colorful decorative rhythmic patterns.
