Shirayama Shosai

A lacquer craftsman of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Edo. His real surname was Hosono and his given name was Fukumatsu. He studied maki-e under Kobayashi Kozan and tsuishu, tsuigoku and raden under Gamo Morikazu, and worked for the Kiritsu Kogyo Kaisha in his youth. He was skilled in maki-e, lacquering and raden, but he excelled in traditional techniques and his intricate and delicate togidashi maki-e was unmatched, making him a leader in the world of modern lacquer craftsmanship. In 1881 (Meiji 14), he received a certificate of commendation at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exposition, in 1892 he was a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo University of the Arts), in 1902 he was awarded an honorary prize at the Paris World's Fair, in 1906 he was an Imperial Household Artist, and served as a judge at the 5th and 6th Agricultural Exhibitions. 明治大正期の漆工。江戸生まれ。本姓は細野,名は福松。蒔絵を小林好山,堆朱,堆黒,螺鈿を蒲生盛和に学び,青年時代は起立工商会社に勤務した。蒔絵,塗,螺鈿ともに長じたが,なかでも伝統的な技巧に優れ,精巧繊細な研出蒔絵は,他の模倣追随を許さず,近代漆工界の第一人者であった。明治14(1881)年第2回内国勧業博・褒状,25年東京美術学校(東京芸大)教授,33年パリ万国博・名誉賞,39年帝室技芸員,第5・6回農展・審査員となる。東京小石川の蓮華寺に葬られる。<参考文献>『近代日本の漆工芸』
