Year of death: August 7, 1923 Year of birth: September 22, 1853 (October 24, 1853) A lacquer craftsman of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Edo. His real surname was Hosono and his given name was Fukumatsu. He studied maki-e under Kobayashi Kozan and tsuishu, tsuigoku and raden under Gamo Morikazu, and worked for the Kiritsu Kogyo Kaisha in his youth. He was skilled in maki-e, lacquering and raden, but he excelled in traditional techniques and his intricate and delicate togidashi maki-e was unmatched, making him a leader in the world of modern lacquer craftsmanship. In 1881 (Meiji 14), he received a certificate of commendation at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exposition, in 1892 he was a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo University of the Arts), in 1902 he was awarded an honorary prize at the Paris World's Fair, in 1906 he was an Imperial Household Artist, and served as a judge at the 5th and 6th Agricultural Exhibitions.
