This temple is located in Oiwa, Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City, and is of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Myoshinji school. Its name is Dairyuzan. Its principal image is Amida Nyorai. It was built by Imagawa Yoshimoto during the Kyoroku era (1528-32), and was originally called Zentoku-in, but in 1536 (Tenbun 5), the head priest Sessai Taigen invited Daikyu Sokyu, the teacher of Emperor Gonara, to be the founding priest, and renamed it Rinzai-ji, becoming a temple of imperial prayer. Located at the foot of Mount Shizuhata, it is famous as the temple where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his childhood as a hostage of the Imagawa family and was educated by Sessai. It was burned down during the Tensho period (1573-1592) but was rebuilt by Ieyasu. The Hojo Garden is a three-tiered pond garden designed in the Edo period and is designated as a national place of scenic beauty. The temple treasures include a colored silk painting of the monk Daikyu, a six-panel folding screen, and the sayings of the monk Tetsuzan, which are designated as important prefectural cultural properties.
