Chersonesos (English spelling)

...Around the 8th and 7th centuries BC, the Scythians migrated to the area, driving out the Cimmerians. The Greeks then established colonies, and the Bosporan Kingdom was born, centered on Pantikapaion in the eastern part of the peninsula. The colony of Chersonesos was also established in the western part of the peninsula, and later became an independent city-state. In the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, the center of the Scythian state moved from the Dnieper coast to Crimea, and they came into conflict with the Chersonesos, which invited the intervention of the Pontic kings in the southwestern Black Sea region.
